The Pangoa Cooperative
The Pangoa Cooperative was founded on October 2, 1977 by a group of 50 producers. Most of them come from the high Andean areas. In the 80´s Pangoa managed to associate more than 2000 coffee producers and selling more than 60000 quintals per year.
From 1990 to 1995 the Pangoa Cooperative fell into a great resection due to the social and political cirissis generated by terrorism throughout the country, a large number of partners fled away leaving their farms. At this stage the members were reduced to less than 150.
We call the period from 1996 to 2000 “resurgence” thanks to the pacification (defeat of terrorism) many producers returned to their farms to repopulate the communities. The Pangoa Cooperative got the fair trade certifcation and later on the organic certification achieving the first direct export in 2002 to the United States market.
From 2003 onwards, Pangoa found customers in the United States, Canada, England, France, among others.
Currently 60% of our exports go to North America and about 40% to Europe, we have 698 partners with an average extension of 4.5 hectares of coffee, producing a total of about 25,000 quintals of coffee. Pangoa has 196 partners among cocoa farmers producing 450TM cocoa per year.
In the last 15 years, 40% of the fair trade social premium has been invested for different social support programs for our producers such as: educational fund, health fund, coffee plantation renewal fund, coffee benefit implementation fund, modules of solar dryer, brushcutting machines.
